Previously on loan to the State Capitol ...
Trotter Galleries loaned to
the Capitol Art Program their collection of 28 pastels and color
sketches by early California artist, Mary DeNeale Morgan (1868-1948),
documenting firsthand the ruins caused by the 1906 fire and earthquake
in San Francisco. They were displayed in the leadership offices and
committee rooms of the State Capitol Building, as well as in the State
Capitol Museum's exhibit "Rumors of Great Disaster" in the first floor
museum rooms. It was a historically important documentary by one of
California's most recognized and distinguished woman artist active
during the first half of the 20th century. Morgan was born in San
Francisco. She studied at the School of Design (1884-1895), and opened a
studio in Oakland in 1896. In 1909 she settled in Carmel where she
bought the studio-home of artist Sydney Yard located on Lincoln near
Seventh.
