<br>Considered one of America's foremost marine painters, William Ritschel's presence as a resident artist on the Monterey Peninsula added greatly to the substance and prestige of the California art community.

<br>Ritschel moved to California sometime after 1909. He exhibited at the S.F. Art Institute in 1911, at the P.P.I.E., 1915 where he won a gold medal, and at the California State Fair in 1916.  In 1921 he and his wife moved into the unique, castle-like, stone studio-home he had built high on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Carmel Highlands.
