Josephine Bayley Biography


Josephine Bayley was born on a farm near Vacaville, California in 1866.  By the 1880s Bayley had settled in San Francisco and was a pupil of William Keith.  She maintained a studio in the Mercantile Library Buiilding where she became a competent painter of still lifes and landscapes.  Keith's influence is seen in her watercolors and oils.  

She was active in the local art scene until her death in 1904.  One of California's finest painters, her works are rare.  

Exhibited:  Calif. State Fair, 1892-94; Mechanics’ Inst. (SF), 1895; San Francisco Art Association, 1895-98.
