Whitman was a colleague and close friend of his mentor Armin Hansen. As a respected member of the Carmel Art Association and the California Society of Etchers and Lithographers, his works were also exhibited at: The International Society of Etchers, L.A., 1928 (Prize); Smithsonian Institution, 1929; California State Fair, 1947 (Prize); California State Library; Del Monte Hotel Gallery; and Stanford University. In 2002 Whitman was honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Monterey Museum of Art.
