Best known for her paintings of Indian children… both subject matter and style show the influence of her teacher, Grace Carpenter Hudson (1865-1937).

Her most productive time as an artist was during her first marriage in 1904 to artist Gordon Coutts. She was committed to painting first hand, and traveled amongst California and Southwest Indians, camping with the Hopi of Northern Arizona and living with the Pomo Indians of Northern California.
