Considered one of America's foremost marine painters, William Ritschel's presence as a resident artist on the Monterey Peninsula added greatly to the substance and prestige of the California art community.

Ritschel moved to California sometime after 1909. He exhibited at the S.F. Art Institute in 1911, at the P.P.I.E., 1915 where he won a gold medal, and at the California State Fair in 1916. In 1921 he and his wife moved into the unique, castle-like, stone studio-home he had built high on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Carmel Highlands.
