"In the traditional lithographic process the artist paints or draws his design with a greasy ink or crayon on a flat slab of special limestone, which is then treated with a chemical solution (normally a mixture of mild acid and gum arabic) that penetrates just the pores of the surface not protected by the design…for multicolor printing a separate stone is used for each color. The lithographic press requires individual rollers for ink and for water."
