Born in Fresno, California, James March Phillips first studied in San Francisco at the Jean Turner Art Academy. He later studied under Louis J. Rogers, Alfred Owles and J. Paget Fredricks. An avid outdoorsman, he painted many watercolor landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula, with his paintings of coastal views of Pebble Beach and Point Lobos, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Cypress Point Club finding particular favor. Phillips exhibited widely and with success, and his paintings are held in collections across the United States.
