This 'meritorious' color block print is one of a very few by Pedro de Lemos, and one which he exhibited in 1927 at the Palo Alto Art Club.

"The Cliff Dweller" was also exhibited at the Bohemian Club Annual of 1920. Art critic for the 'Oakland Tribute' reproduced this color block print with the comment: "Strength where strength is needed, delicacy where it should be, the print is rarely beautiful and significant."

In "The Cliff Dweller" the bright white of the trunk and braking waves is overlaid with the key block's outlines, which are in turn softened by the subsequent application of the russet background; large patches of reddish pink and green are then afixed to enhance depth and definition.
